Moving Ice

What You Need:

A pan
Ice cubes
A toy
What To Do:
  1. Half-fill the pan with water. Add enough ice cubes so that the ice appears solid on the top.
  2. Place the toy on the ice. Balance it so that it looks "safe".
  3. Put your finger in the water at the edge of the pan and move it back and forth.
  4. What happens to the toy?
What's Going On? The ice may look safe and solid but you can see that the "solid" ice isn't really safe at all. Ice on a river or a lake can sometimes look solid even when it isn't. Waves in the water under the ice can make it move just like the ice in the pan. What Else To Do: Think about skating on ice on a lake or river. What would you do if you saw a friend in the same situation as your toy?
