To discover some of the uses for these rocks and minerals.
Time Needed:
As Activity for Entire Class
As Activity for Smaller Groups
Materials:
The number of sets of cards required will depend on how the class is grouped.
Commodity Cards (each card bears the name of a different economic rock or mineral)
Product Cards (each card bears the name [or picture] of a different product)
Stumper Cards (they don't match with anything)
Answer Cards (card bears the name of commodity and all products it is used in)
Commodity Clues (on each Answer Card - read out 1 or more clue as needed)
Actual Specimens of Economic Rocks & Minerals (Mining Kit)
Actual Samples of End Products (Mining Kit; pictures; from home)
Procedure:
- Divide class into several groups.
- Give each group 3 or more Commodity Cards and the Product Cards that go with them. The Product Cards should all be shuffled in random order. You may also include some Stumper Cards.
- With enough complete sets of cards, each group can do the entire activity - however, additional time must be budgeted for the activity.
- Commodity Clues (on the back of Answer Cards) can be read out as needed.
- Each group tries to match the Product Cards to the appropriate Commodity Card. When finished, each group discuss their findings with the entire class.
- Some groups may be thrown off by the Stumper Cards.
Related Activities:
1. Each individual student can work on this activity. They can match the list of products to the appropriate commodity. Or each student could have a complete set of cards.
2. Students or groups could each research one commodity and submit a report or deliver presentation to the class.
3. Students could bring in products from home that contain rocks or minerals, and share information about them with other students.
